I love this time of year, as we inch closer to the close of another year and embark on a time which is equal parts happiness and chaos. During this time of celebration and madness, it can be hard to maintain your schedule- I usually end up throwing mine right out the window. I also find it is the time when my treasured sleep routine goes MIA (usually returning early January), whether you have found a rhythm with your little one or are still finding your way- this change can be really stressful for some parents.
I wanted to share a couple of tips I had shared with me, in the hopes they can provide some assistance during this time.
- If you are travelling away from home, try and get some understanding of where your baby will be able to sleep (try for a space you can keep dark and quiet but don’t worry if it isn’t perfect); this will allow you to plan ahead and ensure you have everything you will need packed and ready before you go.
- Make a list of what your baby needs for their bedtime routine at home (include middle of the night feeds), try and keep the elements of this routine that can work in your home away from home- babies respond to consistency, but small changes are normal
- Set expectations for your friends and family around your babes sleep- no matter where you are staying; it is ok to say “can I please have a space away from everyone I can take my little one if they need it” or “this is the routine I am trying to follow, you can support me by doing X or Y”
- The festive season doesn’t last forever, you will be able to get back into your routine in a few days; don’t be too hard on yourself. Enjoy your time with your little one and any time it gets too much, breathe this too shall pass.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
